The Food for Schools Program sponsored by the Montgomery Village Foundation began again this new school year. Twice a month, starting in September bags of ”weekend” food are delivered to our community via the Linkages to Learning program at South Lake Elementary School (SLES). This program connects children in the schools to community services that are very much needed. The SLES staff is easily able to distribute the bags which contain a variety of protein, cereal, fruits and vegetables to help families get through the weekends when there are no school breakfasts and lunches. Last year, 19 distributions of 40 bags or more were given out, totaling over 760 bags of food! We hope to continue this success again this school year.
Of course, this would not be possible without the contributions from our wonderful Montgomery Village community. A very special thanks to the members of Covenant United Methodist Church (CUMC) who have contributed the bulk of our funds. Their amazing congregation has coordinated regular contributions to the program, not only collecting checks and gift cards from their members, but also consolidating funds into gift cards to purchase the necessary food. And this is in addition to collecting food regularly at their services and bringing it to the pantry. We also owe a big thanks to the individual contributions of Montgomery Village residents who purchase gift cards and then deliver them to the MVF Office. This all takes planning and effort and we could not do any of this without all of you. Every cent is spent on food and our total amount last year was $3,728.35!
We welcome contributions of food and gift cards to local stores anytime throughout the year at the MVF Office, 10120 Apple Ridge Road. Contributions in check form can be made out to Covenant United Methodist Church with “Food for Schools” in the memo line and sent to CUMC at 20301 Pleasant Ridge Drive, Montgomery Village MD 20886.
Thank you! It is programs like this that keep our community strong and show our Montgomery Village spirit!
