On February 15, the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County (AWLMC) honored the work of their many volunteers by hosting a huge potluck party. For those who are not familiar with AWLMC, it’s an all-volunteer (over 100 active members) organization of people who help unwanted or surrendered cats in Montgomery County.
The potluck itself was filled with great food, lots of laughs, and many new faces meeting some original volunteers who started the organization over 16 years ago. Additionally, Montgomery County Council President Sidney Katz dropped in and spoke about the importance of volunteerism—getting people working together for the betterment of our county.
There was also a contest to determine which cat would reign as the Valentine’s Day King or Queen. It was a spirited contest with each cat in residence having his or her fans, but in the end, Streudel was selected as the Valentine’s Day Queen. She is entertaining and very smart! Come and visit her; this beautiful girl is available for adoption.
AWLMC, 12 Park Avenue, Gaithersburg, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates a no-kill shelter for adoptable cats and promotes responsible pet ownership. The shelter also operates a pet food bank called Chompers and a low-cost spay/neuter program; these programs serve both dogs and cats.
